Flying Monkeys in Iowa Create Prosthetic Hand for Georgia Girl

Extra Credit reports on "The Flying Monkeys", a FIRST Lego League team from Iowa that is competing with teams from around the world for the "Global Innovation Award," an honor that would net them $20,000 to use to patent their innovation and develop further prototypes.

The Flying Monkeys, a Girl Scout sponsored team of sixth and seventh graders, have created a prosthetic hand to help a 3-year-old girl, Danielle, with a congenital limb difference color and write with her dominant hand. As of February 8, they are the only team from Iowa competing in this event.

The girls found Danielle by posting notes for input on websites during the initial stages of their research. Danielle's mother responded to the post and the girls have been communicating electronically with the Georgia family since then.

Amazing! Have you ever used technology to make a difference in your community or the world beyond?
