Repair work to vital services is underway, and the United States Army Corps of Engineers is positioned throughout the state to help with emergency response. For those who wish to contribute to relief efforts, The Red Cross of Central South Carolina and The Salvation Army are two of the organizations helping to provide shelter and much-needed supplies to those who have been affected by the storm.
How to help Girl Scouts in South Carolina
Additionally, two Girl Scout councils serve the majority of the Girl Scouts in South Carolina. Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina are still assessing the storm’s impact—sadly, more flooding is predicted on the coast over the next few days—and we’ll share this council’s update once they have determined the best way for people to help.
More than 4,700 members and their families from parts of Girl Scouts of South Carolina – Mountains to Midlands were affected by the storm, which caused severe flooding, electrical blackouts, and disruptions to water and gas services. At this time, we are not aware of any injuries to any of the girls, staff, or their families in this area.
The council currently has collection centers open at the Spartanburg and Greenville Service Centers. A distribution plan is being finalized that will deliver items to the Columbia area on Friday and as often as needed after that.
Supplies needed include:
• Water bottles (individually packaged or gallons)
• Canned goods and packaged snacks
• New socks, blankets, pillows, clothing
• Toiletries and wet wipes
• Baby items and toys
• Plastic containers
• Paper towels
• Gift cards to Target and Wal-Mart
The council also shared that you can show your support during this trying time by using the hashtag #FloodGSSCMMwithlove on social media.
Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the flooding.
