Quest, the Muscular Dystrophy Association's Magazine, reports on the six Girl Scouts from Atlanta who belong to GENIUS (Girls Exploring New Ideas Using Science). GENIUS designed and built a wheelchair backup camera for Quinn Schnitzlein, a 10-year-old boy with spinal muscular atrophy. The backup camera won first place in the FIRST LEGO League Georgia Championship, as well as the Make a Difference award in the FIRST robotics 2011 World Festival in St. Louis, Missouri.
The backup camera system—which they are adapting for another friend with spinal muscular atrophy who is a fellow Scout—needs to be customized for each user’s abilities. Interested innovators can find basic information about materials and design on the GENIUS website.
