Sixteen-year-old Kay Havlicek organized a free, week long children’s art camp in August 2008. It was aimed at reaching kids whose parents might not be able to afford the typical art summer camp. The project was the culmination of the Wenatchee teenager’s participation in Girl Scouts that earned her a Gold Award - the highest Girl Scout honor - in April.

One amazing aspect of the story is Havlicek's resilience in the face of a debilitating brain tumor. The diagnosis - a dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor - a rare, very slow growing benign brain tumor assumed to be present since birth. A surgery took away some of the pain - the headaches she refers to as “brain freeze” and a migraine-type headache - but despite the surgery to remove the tumor, Havliceck still has constant headaches and does not know their cause. Despite all of this, she continues to work toward instilling the joy of art in others. She has a passion for art and says half of the closet in her room is filled with her art and supplies. Be sure to read the entire article, and share with us inspiring examples of Girl Scouting in your communities.

Girl Scouts Go Platinum

Congratulations to The Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Council, whose Science and Technology Lodge in Hockessin, DE, has been awarded the platinum certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). What is flocking you may ask? Flocking is surprising someone by decorating their yards with an army of plastic pink flamingos - probably the best idea ever. Unsurprisingly, this is fast becoming a fund raising trend among Girl Scouts.

In North Platte, NE, NBC News 2 is reporting on Jayla Trosper, a scout who is flocking to raise money in order for her troop to visit Savannah Georgia - the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low, who was the founder of girl scouts - and all around beautiful city... In other news, I wish I had a yard for people to flock. I am a big proponent of pink flamingo decorations, in any capacity.

Photo Run-Down: Building and Launching Rockets

This past weekend, Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore built and launched rockets! In the post, titled "What does ‘good health’ mean to girls?", Westley states and asks:

"America’s health starts with healthy children, but what does “good health” mean to kids? To understand children’s attitudes about health – and to ensure that our programs to reach them hit their mark – we must expand the conversation about improving America’s health to include these new voices. At Girl Scouts of the USA, we’re working to bring an important perspective to the table: we know what works for girls."

More so, Westley offers insight into what health means to girls:

"Girls view health holistically, which means they place the same or even greater
emphasis on emotional and social health as physical health. Therefore, any plan
that strictly focuses on physical health could miss the mark with girls. For
example, physical activity needs to be given social relevance; it should be
promoted and taught in ways that are meaningful to girls. By emphasizing the
emotional and social benefits of physical activity, we will help girls recognize
how exercise affects the things they care about, such as their body image,
friendships, and confidence in their abilities."

That sounds on the mark to me! The bill, H.R. 621, was introduced by Rep. Jack Kingston and easily passed by a voice vote on Oct. 13. Sen. Susan Collins sponsored a companion bill, S. 451. Instead of moving that forward, the Senate simply passed the House version on Oct. 19 by Unanimous Consent. President Obama signed the bill at 3:15 p.m. ET during a ceremony at the White House that included Connie L. "Congress only allows the minting of two coins a year and this is such a fitting way to honor our Movement and the million of girls and women whose lives Girl Scouting has touched. We are grateful to the President, the House and the Senate for their support."

The act does not contain specific coin design language, which is standard. The coin design will involve collaborative efforts between the United States Mint, the Girl Scouts of the United States of America, the Commission of Fine Arts, and the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee. The main criteria is that the design must be "emblematic of the centennial of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America." The silver coin will include the inscriptions ‘Liberty’, ‘In God We Trust’, ‘United States of America’, and ‘E Pluribus Unum’). Each will weigh 26.73 grams and have a diameter of 1.5 inches.

The Girl Scouts USA Centennial Commemorative Coin Act includes a provision for a $10 surcharge per coin paid to the GSUSA and made available for Girl Scout program development and delivery.

Weekend Run-Down

Today's Weekend Run-Down ranges from a cookie loving Mayor to examples of outstanding Girl Scout Community Service:

In San Angelo, TX, The Standard Times reports on the mentoring opportunities provided by the Girl Scout Cookie Program.

Bill Bunten, the Mayor of Topeka, KS, toasted the Girl Scouts at an even called "Milk and Girl Scout Cookies with the Mayor". This ground-breaking partnership, called The Power of Girls, will connect girls worldwide and mobilize them around important global issues, including the critical role that girls’ education and leadership plays in addressing poverty. In true Girl Scout style, The Power of Girls puts girls at the heart of a conversation about the most important issues of our time.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401036092596910674" style="FLOAT: left; Girls will see a simulated rollover accident, try to walk a straight line while wearing impaired vision goggles and meet local police officers. In an effort to educate Girl Scouts on preventative maintenance, girls will learn how to change a tire, jump a car, and check necessary car fluids. This all would've, no doubt, been very helpful to me as a teenager! Twelve GEICO auto damage representatives will be on hand to guide the girls through the day.

Of the partnership - Rynthia Rost, GEICO vice president
says, "GEICO is working hard to educate teens on road and vehicle
safety through our teen safe driving program and by partnering with great
organizations like the Girl Scouts."

The event is part of a comprehensive road skills, auto care and driving safety series, designed to help the girls earn the new GEICO Road Safety Patch. Once the classes are completed and the Girl Scouts sign an honor code agreement, they are eligible for the patch which shows they have learned how to make smart decisions on the road.

Justine R.E.A.L.
