Guest Bloggers: Team LOL Takes Over World Festival 2015!

Hi, we’re FIRST LEGO League Team 2430, LOL (Lots of Legos), and this is our story.

Our team is made up of six Girl Scouts—Natalie, Lauren, Aleksey, Janelle, Rebecca, and Emma—from different troops in southeast Wisconsin. Sponsored by Girl Scouts, we started competing in the FIRST Lego League (FLL) three years ago. FLL has been a huge and very important influence in our lives and has taught us so many amazing things, from how to program a robot and master a new language to how to work together as a team.

We found out about the FLL when one of our parents saw an advertisement for it. We were very interested and quickly formed our team. After our first year, we were more than satisfied with our experience, and were very excited about continuing on to the next year’s challenge together. The experience got more and more fun and engaging as we went on. Our team was amazed at how much we had learned and how fun it was. We couldn’t wait until our third year.

At our kick-off meeting, we began talking about goals for the upcoming season. One team member raised her hand and said that we should make it a goal to get to the World Festival in St. Louis. It was an ambitious goal, but we were determined to accomplish it. Our team put more time and effort into this season than any of the previous years.

After making it through the first two levels of competition, we faced our biggest challenge so far: the state competition. After practicing presentations over and over again, we went into the judging rooms excited. We sat through a long and greatly anticipated award ceremony and jumped up with pure happiness as our name was called for the Champion’s Award! Next stop: St. Louis!

Packing up the van for the trip made it seem so real. After our long drive we headed into the America’s Center Convention Complex. The doors opened and we rushed into the pit area. We heard so many different languages and dialects around us, we couldn’t believe our ears! Our team set up the pit and invited other teams in to hear their stories. It was everything we imagined it would be and so much more! Our presentations went smoothly, and our robot drove with confidence. We cheered and danced to our theme song “Live Out Loud.” The whole thing was like a dream. We had accomplished our goal, and the feeling was better than a million Lego trophies could ever bring us.

If you are interested in any of the four FIRST programs, you should definitely join—we promise you won’t regret it. You will learn so much and have so much fun. FIRST inspires us and so many other people around the world. You will do things you thought were impossible. Just set some goals—you may surprise yourself with what you can accomplish!

As motivational speaker Les Brown says, “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.”
