A Camp for the Twenty-First Century

Girl Scouts--Arizona Cactus-Pine Council (GSACPC) is celebrating record-breaking cookie sales, and the girls are taking their cookie money all the way to...camp!

Yes, Arizona’s #cookiebosses have broken council sales records with the launch of Cookies for Camp Sombrero, a girl-led effort that uses earnings from the Girl Scout cookie sale to modernize a beloved camp property and reimagine it as the Leadership Center for Girls and Women, a camp for the twenty-first century.

At the Arizona Girl Scouts' 2013 annual meeting, the girls decided that any cookie proceeds generated after the first 3 million boxes in both 2014 and 2015 would be used to transform Camp Sombrero.

"The idea to use cookie proceeds for Camp Sombrero came from our girl-led annual meeting in 2013. We want to contribute to building this new urban camp, which we are excited to utilize," said Senior Girl Scout Ellie Fessler.

In 2014, in the largest sale in council history, Arizona Girl Scouts sold 3,232,713 cookie boxes and raised $555,800 to build their first two camp cabins. These will be constructed with 100-percent recycled material, as the girls are adamant that construction be environmentally friendly.

Camp Sombrero, perched at the base of South Mountain in Phoenix, Arizona, is owned by the council and has served girls over the last 40 years. This 14.5-acre site will be transformed into the Leadership Center for Girls and Women as part of a larger effort, the Campaign for Girls in Arizona, which is what first inspired the girls to contribute to the camp.

In addition to transforming Camp Sombrero, this ambitious campaign will allow GSACPC to bring Girl Scouting to more girls, especially in underrepresented communities, as well as develop and support new adult volunteers and expand program offerings.
